Working Fluid Of Geothermal Heat Pump

In order to live in harmony with the nature the renewable eco friendly resources are being used widely. One of the energy resources that are being used widely is geothermal energy. The geothermal energy can be harnessed by the use of geothermal heat pump. The three major components that are used in the geothermal heat pump are the loop field, liquid pump, water source pump. The loop field does the function of transferring the heat to and fro from the ground with the help of the heat exchangers. These loops contain cheap anti freeze mixture of water and chemicals. The following are the specifications of the working fluids that are used in the geothermal heat pump.

A working fluid is defined as "the mass against which a system operates in order to produce acceleration required in exchange of momentum which is the Unit of the movement.

The most common working fluid in the geothermal heat pump is a mixture of the following substances.

1. Water, Molecular formula H2O
2. propylene glycol, Molecular formula C3H8O2
3. Denatured Alcohol
4. Methanol, Molecular Formula, molecular Formula CH3OH

The first fluid that is used in the loop field is water. Water is basically used in the pump because it is the most widely found fluid. The melting point of water is 0 degrees Celsius and its boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius. These temperatures make water the most suitable fluid in the loop field.

The next fluid is the Propylene glycol is a compound that has its melting point at -59 degree Celsius and its boiling point at 188.2 degree Celsius. The important characteristic that makes water useable in the loop field is that it is an anti freeze compound and is non toxic.

The third fluid that is denatured alcohol is used as a working fluid in the heat exchange pump because it is an azeotrope. The specialty of the substance is that it prevents the change of the properties of the working fluid and it remains "a constantly boiling mixture".

Methanol is present in the working fluid simply because it is a part of the denatured alcohol.
