Raising Awareness Of Ground Source Heating Systems
The actual application of the ground source water systems began in the late 1940s'. It uses the method of harnessing the earth's temperature by drilling deep holes 6 to 200 feet deep and placing pipes down the shafts. The earth's layers are like a cave. They have high temperatures when the air temperature is low and have low temperature when the air temperature is high. The geothermal heating systems manipulate the earth's temperature and perform the functions of heating and cooling in winters and summers respectively. They are highly efficient and give excellent results.
The geothermal heating systems offer several advantages. They help conserve the limited sources of energy like oil, natural gas, coal etc. They are size-efficient and occupy limited place. The geothermal heating systems come in two types- closed loop systems and open loop systems. The closed loop systems include horizontal, vertical and pond-lake devices. The horizontal devices are installed in places where there is sufficient surface area of land. They are generally installed near homes and small row-houses. The vertical devices are constructed in areas with shallow land surface and narrow space. The pond-lake devices are installed in areas where there is a water body or reserves of water. The open loop systems are constructed in areas with supply of fresh and clean water.
Geothermal heating systems have high capacity to retain humidity and have a long life of 25-50 years. They do not involve recurring costs which makes them quite cost-effective. They have mobile parts which can be easily and conveniently replaced in case of damage. They are easy to maintain and incur low maintenance costs. They also have low cost integrated water systems and low-operation cost.
The time has come to raise awareness of geothermal heating systems. People ought to be educated on the benefits of geothermal heating systems before all the other limited energy resources get depleted. These systems are highly feasible as people with all budgets can afford it. A simple system can also be constructed manually. Communities can install common heating systems if the usage among all the members is not much. Many organizations all over, especially in Europe, North America and UK have established organizations for research on and promotion of geothermal heating systems. Owing to the dries launched by these organizations, more and more people are installing these eco-friendly heating systems. The R&D units of these organizations are conducting research for providing standards for these systems. Various reputed universities are initiating drives for promotion of these heating systems.
