Pet And Spect Scanning And Nuclear Medicines

PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines are scanning methods in medical terms. PET is the acronym of Positron Emission Tomography. This is one type of PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines scanning methods, which includes cross sectional data gaining and rebuilding. This is same as the Computed Tomography or CT scanning. PET scanning has particular potential in imaging some diseases and disorders of the brain and heart. PET has one new emerging application of Lung cancer imaging that involves inhalation of radionuclide instead of consuming them orally or through injections.

PET scanning among PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines is able to show enough number of images through out the body of patient. Images of PET are useful to carry out the studies of epilepsy. PET scanning from PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines is important to evaluate blood clots or bleeding in the brain as well. Study of the dementia becomes easy with PET scanning. Besides these applications, PET scanning is also important in imaging and evaluation of brain tumors, coronary artery disease and detection of transient ischemia. PET scanning easily differentiates between recurring, active tumor growth and dead soft tissue masses in the cancer treatment.

SPECT is the other scanning method among PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines. SPECT is abbreviation of Single Positron Emission Computed Tomography. This method is used in nuclear medicine assessment. Scanner in SPECT method uses gamma cameras to detect the gamma radiations in the body by radioactive substances. These gamma cameras easily rotate for better detection. Computer reconstruction of SPECT is similar to the reconstruction of PET. However, PET scanners are more sensitive than the SPET scanners and often available in largest medicals. Patient gets effective result from PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines.

All these images are helpful to show body anatomy and functioning. These images can be easily obtained with radionuclide. Radionuclide is low-level radioactive chemical used in the nuclear medicine studies. Body absorbs radioactive substances and radiates gamma rays. Absorption rates of the radionuclide vary person to person. Radiation helps in imaging process. Therefore, PET and SPECT scanning and nuclear medicines are important in detection and determination of various diseases and injuries.
