Nuclear medicine in renal disorders has wide range of diagnostic methods for renal disorders. It is a valuable tool in determination of renal functions. Nuclear medicine is the branch of diagnostic radiology and gives unique structural and functional information of the infected body organ.

In the practice of the nuclear medicine, administration of the body is carried out with the help of radioactive isotopes in the form of drugs that travel to particular body part. These radioactive isotopes then emit gamma radiations. These radiations are captured with gamma cameras for imaging. Appropriate amount of radioactive isotopes and location of the organ, informs about the body organ functions.

Usually to access the renal functions, renal scintigraphies are used and expressed as glomerular filtration and kidney perfusion. Now day's recent methods depend on positron emission tomography that generates images with superior resolution and complete quantization of biological processes like enzyme activities and transport activities. With the help of renal scintigraphy, relative amount of radioactive substances are extracted from blood of kidney. It is proportional to kidneys function and is called glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Renal disorder is mutilation of excretory kidney function. In these disorders, urinary amount decreases considerably in many patients whereas acute renal failure is associated with normal kidney size. Diuresis varies from normria to anuria. Because of this and other serious problems, application of sensitive and inexpensive methods in assessment of renal function is necessary. Therefore, imaging and non-imaging techniques are available to measure GFR and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) using radioactive substances.

These techniques will help in diagnosis and treatment for the renal disorders. Results obtained from such techniques have shown nuclear medicine in renal disorders is helpful to cover patients from cancer. Treatment for renal disorder is of few weeks and provides the result in very short duration of time. Therefore, nuclear medicines in renal disorder are a effective way to get rid of renal diseases.
