Nuclear Medicine Technique

Nuclear medicine techniques help the doctor to understand the problem in the patient's body. In fact, a doctor can understand the problem only if it is possible to see what is happening in the internal organs of the patient's body. It is impossible to carry on with surgery without understanding the functioning of the internal body organs. Hence, nuclear medicine techniques are used to diagnose the disorders in almost all parts of the body.

Nuclear medicine techniques combine the use of computer, gamma cameras and radiation. Theses techniques provide non-invasive nature of procedure and comfort to the patient. The patient will be given certain amount of radiation first. This is given by either oral or by intravenous injection. There are various types of radioisotopes available to show various parts of the body. However, only few of them are recognized by Food and Drug Administration.

The radiation enters the patient's body and emits faint rays. The rays are treated by gamma cameras fixed above or below the imaging tables. Then computed tomography is used to turn gamma rays into electronic signals. This will help the doctor to get clear images of tissues and organs of the body. The main advantage of nuclear medicine technique is that it shows not only the organs but also the functioning of the organs.

Nuclear medicine techniques involve preparation of radiation. Some of the well-known hospitals in US are preparing radioactive pharmaceuticals in large quantities.

Nuclear medicine imaging techniques are mostly used in the field of medicine to detect any disorders or unexplained pain in any part of the body. The images shown by x-ray and CT scans will be normal. Nevertheless, there will be some disorders that can be detected only with nuclear medicine imaging scans.

Nuclear medicine is becoming indispensable since the techniques used are simple and non-invasive. However, these techniques require more time to complete the process. The techniques are safe and effective. It can be used even for diagnosing disease in children. These techniques should be used in a pregnant woman or feeding woman only after considering the safety issues. A feeding mother may be required to stop breast-feeding period in order to use nuclear medicine.
