Nuclear Medicine Study
Nuclear medicine study is done in more than 100 ways. However, the most common ways of nuclear medicine study area as follows:
MIBI scan is helpful in diagnosing coronary artery diseases. The disease is detected by injecting Technitium-99 in the vein of patient's arm. You should not eat anything before two hours of this procedure. You should not smoke or drink any caffeine products. If you are a diabetic patient, then inform that to your doctor. This scan is performed at two levels, when the patient is at rest and at stress.
Nuclear medicine study with bone scan is required to diagnose any small bone fracture, bone tumor and infections. Bone density scan is taken to evaluate the density of the bone. There is no special preparation required for studying bones with nuclear medicine scan. But you need to drink enough water and empty the bladder frequently before scanning. This will help the radiation to pass through the soft tissues of the body easily and thus improves the quality of bone scan. Bone SPECT study will be required to get clearer images. This is done with the help of computed tomography.
Gallium scan is done to study infection in any part of the body. The radiation is inserted through intravenous needle in the patient's body and will help diagnosing infections.
Nuclear medicine study with thyroid scan helps in diagnosing hyperactive or under active thyroid glands. Potassium iodine is injected into a patient's body or iodine pills are given to the patient. Sometimes more than one pill is required to capture clear images of thyroid glands.
Renal scan for infection or tumor scan will study any dysfunction in kidney caused by infection. It will also diagnose any abnormal tissues in the kidney.
The study of kidney with renal scan will take two days if any abnormalities in the kidney cause high blood pressure.
Nuclear medicine study is safe and effective. It is non-invasive and is more powerful than x-ray and CT scan.
