Nuclear Medicine Studies

Nuclear medicine studies help in diagnosing various diseases and dysfunction of several organs. The Nuclear medicine studies include the following:

Nuclear medicine studies for bone will help in detecting any abnormalities in bone. Bone SPECT study involves the use of computer to get cross sectional images of area being studied. Bone SPECT study is required to diagnose fine bone fractures, bone tumors and infections.

Brain scan or cisternography scan is done to study the brain and blood circulation to and from the brain. It also helps to view cerebral spinal fluid around the brain.

Nuclear medicine breast imaging is very essential in diagnosing any abnormalities in breast. The cancer growth in multiple areas of the breast will be clearly shown in nuclear medicine breast study. This is also known as Scintimammography. This is very useful when mammography or ultra sounds do not provide clear images of the breast.

Nuclear medicine studies for heart diseases involve studying the heart functioning and blood flow to the heart muscles. This will help in evaluating proper functioning of heart. It will detect strokes immediately. This is known as Cardiology.

Nuclear medicine studies for liver and gall bladder will reveal clear images of any dysfunction in those areas. Any small bleeding in the bowel, infections etc. can be diagnosed easily with nuclear medicine.

The lung scans with nuclear medicine will help to learn about the functioning of lungs, blood flow to and from the lungs.

Nuclear medicine studies were first performed with gamma cameras in 1950s. It requires oral or intravenous insertion of radiation in patient's body. In 90totok of the cases, intravenous needles are used for providing radiation. The radioactive substance will enter the body and remain there temporarily. Then they emit unclear gamma rays, which are measured by gamma camera. The rays are then converted into computer signals, which can be viewed by the doctor easily.

Nuclear medicine studies are helpful for the physicians to get clear understanding of the problem in patient's body. This will not be possible in other imaging tests like x-ray and CT scan. It has been proved as a safe method. Therefore, nuclear medicine studies are inevitable in the field of medicine.
