Nuclear Medicine And Ct Scan

Nuclear medicine is far better than any other imaging tests since it helps to diagnose not only the organs but also the functioning of organs. Both CT scan and Nuclear medicine are using radiation to get clear images of various parts of the body. The radiation amount used in nuclear medicine will be smaller or equal to that used in CT scan.

Sometimes both Nuclear medicine and CT scan are used to diagnose the anatomy and tissues in various parts of organ in a patient's body. The patient will be asked not to eat anything after midnight before scanning. The radiation will be injected into patient's body through intravenous needle. The radioactive substance will enter the soft tissues in the patient's body. Then the physician will use gamma cameras to capture clear images of various organs. Then computed Tomography is used to enhance the quality of the images.

Nuclear medicine is powerful than x-ray and CT scan since the radiation injected will differentiate normal tissues and cancer tissues in a patient's body. Again, in case of breast cancer, CT scan can diagnose cancer growth in one particular area only. However, nuclear medicine will analyze the whole part of the body and detect multiple tumors.

Nuclear medicine will analyze functioning of kidneys, any blood clot in lungs and evaluate the functioning of thyroid glands. The hyperactive or under active of thyroid glands will be diagnosed with the help of nuclear medicine scans. CT scans will also help in diagnosing the above disorders but the clarity will be lesser.

CT scans use x-rays to detect and create images of radiation absorbed by the body. Nevertheless, nuclear medicines use gamma rays to detect and create images from the radiations. The radioactive substances used here will emit gamma rays.

Both Nuclear medicine and CT scans are used in diagnosing cancer growth, cardiovascular diseases and brain functioning. The CT scan and Nuclear medicine scan will help in providing three-dimensional images from different angles. This will help the doctor to diagnose the disease and in deciding, what type of surgery is needed.
