Nuclear Medicine And Bone Scanning
Nuclear medicine is very effective in diagnosing fine fractures or arthritis in bones. Such problems cannot be diagnosed with the help of x-rays. But Nuclear medicine can provide clear images of bones. If there is any cancer growth in the body, then nuclear scan can help to detect whether it has spread to bones. This article helps you understand the relation between Nuclear medicine and bone scanning.
Bone scanning can be used in early detection of diseases in bones. Hidden bone fracture can be detected with bone scanning. Bone scanning is essential for persons with fractures, arthritis and bone tumors, infections in joints and for persons with unexplained pain in bones.
Bone scanning with nuclear medicine does not require any special preparation. However, the patient will be asked to drink more fluids to clear the bladder before scanning. This will help in providing clear images. Many diagnostic methods have been invented in nuclear medicine and bone scanning has benefited from it.
The patient will be injected with radioactive substance and the material will pass through the soft tissues of the body and locate the bones. Scan is taken after two hours from injection. The cameras will be fixed below and above the imaging table. The camera will scan the whole body. The scanning process will take 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
SPECT study is required to look at any part of the body in detail. This process involves using gamma camera. Computer tomography is also used in SPECT study.
Bone scanning with nuclear medicine is safe and the radioactive compounds will stay in your body for shorter period only. It will be passed out of the body shortly through urine or stools. The radiation dosage is less compared to x-ray.
Bone density scanning with nuclear medicine is done to diagnose whether the bone growth is normal as compared to your age. It helps to diagnose the density of your bone. It is a painless process. It will not require any injection. The scanning process requires 20 minutes only. This is the simplest method of imaging tests.
