History Of Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a special type of medicine, which helps in the detection of various diseases in any part of the body with the help of radiation. The history of nuclear medicine goes back to the World War 2. Actually, the Manhattan project in World War 2 eventually led to new source of medical radioisotopes.

Henry Becquerel, a French scientist discovered radioactivity. He discovered that x-ray was produced by Uranium. His discoveries were based on the experiments of scientist Roentgen. Then Marie Curie and Pierre Curie led an advanced research in radium. After that, radium was considered as a medicine to cure diseases.

In 20th Century, various scientists had worked deeply to the advent of new Nuclear medicine. Georg Von Hevesey is a German scientist who discovered radioactive isotopes.

Marshall Brucer is said to be the "father of Nuclear medicine". He was the first president of Nuclear Medicine society. Hal Anger is an American scientist who had invented the scanning camera. He had also developed some ways of diagnostic methods with small samples of radioactive substances.

We have been benefited by the inventions of the above scientists as a whole in the form Nuclear medicine. The vast history of nuclear medicine has opened the doors of various diagnostic methods. In fact, a doctor can clearly understand the problem of the patient if only he can see what is actually happening in the internal organs. Surgery was the only possible way in olden days. But it is really impossible to do open surgery for the purpose of diagnosis. Therefore, the advent of nuclear medicine benefits both the doctor and the patient.

Radioactive substances and gamma cameras are the best inventions in the history of nuclear medicine. Gamma cameras can take clear images when used with radiopharmaceutical substances. This will help the doctor to diagnose even fine fractures in the bone that will not be shown in an x-ray image. Nuclear medicine generated images are far better than x-ray and CT scan images.
