Energy crisis has led man to develop new technologies and then to produce energy through renewable energy resources like the Geothermal Energy. The geothermal energy is nothing but the heat energy that is available below the surface of the earth. This heat is a renewable source of energy. The geothermal energy is being successfully employed man. Heating and cooling functions can be easily carried out with the geothermal exchange heat pump. In cold countries the pump uses the earth as a source of heat while performing heating functions. While performing cooling functions the geothermal exchange heat pump uses the earth as a heat sink.

The Geothermal pumps have an internal and external loop that contains a refrigerant. The external loop is used in grounds and the internal loop is used in buildings. These loops directly heat or cool through the heath exchangers that contain water.

The Geo thermal system can perform two functions namely heating and cooling. While performing the heating function the external fluid is pumped from the earth at the temperature of about 8-16 degree Celsius via the heat exchange unit. Due to the heat the refrigerant expands, changes from liquid state to gaseous state. Due to this the heat from the external fluid is absorbed cooling it. The refrigerant is then pumped into compressor due to which it gets pressurized and superheated. This gas releases the heat in the atmosphere within the house there by warming the air. Due to the loss of heat the gas is again liquidized and the same cycle continues.

The cooling function of the Geo thermal system is very similar. The direction of the flow of the fluid is reversed. The heated and compressed refrigerant that is let out of the compressor heats the external fluid. When it passes through the evaporator, it vaporizes and takes up the heat from the room. This heated fluid is then pumped in to the ground where it is cooled and re circulated.

The Cooling and heating functions are just some of the small wonders by the geothermal energy. Even today, the greater part remains unused and undiscovered.
